There, There Katie - Jack’s Mannequin
This song was written by Andrew McMahon of Jack’s Mannequin for his sister, who was donating bone marrow to him while he was suffering from Leukaemia.
A documentary and EP, titled Dear Jack, outlining his experiences battling the disease, was released November 3rd. It is a surprisingly removed yet none the less harrowing account of what cancer can do to someone. I didn’t know that pneumonia caused so many deaths in cancer patients, nor did I know that a lot of them become addicted to the pain killers given to them during their treatments.
The one thing I liked the most about the movie was Andrew’s unwillingness to feel sorry for himself or have a pity party. You don’t see him cry once in the movie, and he puts on a strong front whilst battling something very serious. This is a quality I find particularly admirable, as there are a lot of people who think being able to pity themselves is a god given right, no matter what situation they are in.
You should definitely check out this story, it is sure to pull on your heart strings a little. The EP compliments the movie perfectly, and you can tell that the songs on it really are made with a lot of emotion and purpose. Andrew really does have talent, and knowing his story behind the songs really makes them that much more amazing.
